Therapy in a Nutshell
United States
Приєднався 16 сер 2016
I’m Emma McAdam, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and my mission is to make mental health resources easier to access. I take therapy skills and psychological research and condense them down into bite-sized nuggets of help.
As a licensed therapist, one thing I’ve noticed is that most people have no idea of what they can do to improve depression, anxiety, or other mental illness.
I’m here to spread the message that while mental illness is real, it’s common, it’s debilitating, it’s also treatable. There are dozens of research-backed approaches to treating depression, anxiety, ptsd, and other mental illness. Change, growth, and healing are possible. Please keep courage! Try one little thing every day to improve your life and health, and things can get so much better!
I am not currently taking any new clients, but you can find a therapist with my sponsor: BetterHelp.com/therapyinanutshell

If you are lying in bed trying to go to sleep, and find your mind racing, feeling anxious, what's the next best step to stop the anxiety cycle? -Jenny
You all know that feeling. I’ve been there, You’ve got a big day ahead, or you’ve had a long day behind you, you really need to sleep, you’re soooo tired, but when you finally lay down, your mind starts running, you worry about everything, or you can’t stop thinking about all the mistakes you made throughout the day.
You can feel your stress levels rise, and despite your best efforts, you can’t sleep. And that makes you more anxious, which perpetuates the cycle, and on it goes. You desperately want to sleep, but your brain won’t shut up. In this video you’ll learn why your brain doesn’t trust you to process these thoughts during the day. And, there is something you can do about this. So, let’s talk about the science behind why your brain gets stuck doing this, and 3 things you can do to escape that cycle:
1. Accept that trying to force yourself to not think about something backfires
2. Let your brain run the update
3. Gentle distraction in limited doses

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

It's 2024 no one has guilt anymore
It’s funny cause it’s true❤😂
Thanks!
I have Adhs/anxiety and Trauma and i just started with 5 min(holy shit is heavy) 5min was like 15min...i was allways thinking(breathing in and out^^) and soon i hear something or my dog came..i needed to get back to breathing^^ i will try it..and give me best like i know it from the gym
Ashwagandharishta from Planet Ayurveda has helped me manage my stress and anxiety. I feel much calmer now.
Times of anxiety is also time of prayer for myself. Not only can i give my worries to God, but I can pray about them and ask for His help. Once I start praying, especially my Rosary, I end up falling asleep. ❤
Could she have used currents to help her travel so far so fast?

I have a question about NARM. I have cptsd, abuse amnesia/dissociation, anxiety, and depression. I've been in sessions for 2 months. My therapist starts out by asking what I want for myself, then has me talk about what I'm going through, with the pauses to sit with the feelings. Just when I am the most emotional and upset and at the topmost branch of the trauma tree, the session ends, he recaps what happened and it's over. I'm left with all the feelings and flooding and no way to get back down, no direction or guidance. Then I take a shower and nap, and am very sensitive and extra reliant on my service dog for a few days. Within a few hours I dissociate and forget details of the session. Is that how NARM is supposed to go?
These thoughts can be brutal. Thanks for the explanation.
Soooo helpful thank you.
Thank you Ma'am ❤️
Your videos are changing my life- I am so grateful for you! Thank you 🙏💐
Great, thank you!
Thank you for this video. Great advice and some excellent and helpful strategies. I really needed this conversation.
This is an example of why people turn to medication rather than forking out for years of therapy
The positive impact you have on people is immeasurable. You’re doing such a noble job by uploading these videos, helping so many, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
Im not anxious in work, but at parties
That was brilliant advice and wisdom! Thank you so much 🙏🏼 😊
I wish I could find a therapist like you!
How can you tell when someone is safe to talk to in person and not always through social media
Thank you so much. Your videos have helped me a lot in the last six months, which has been the worst period of my life. Your informative, kind disposition has helped to bring hope that I’ll get through it all and see better days.
I am watching this video while having morning anxiety. I am feeling shortness of breath, and taking deep breaths to manage that. I feel like my chest is compressed and it is really overwhelming. All this anxiety is because I am desperately looking for a job and I have to get a job within the next 2 months. But even though I feel this stressed I am lazy and procrastinate a lot which worsens this anxiety😢
Respectfully, please do not post your birthdate publicly. It can be dangerous:
Can I be calm doing a stressful thing!? Apparently I can't even be calm watching the 'stressful things' in this video 😬
Why why is life like this, my past memory makes me feel SO bad about life and myself I really hope someone can reply to this and agree I don’t want to feel alone anymore, I want to tell my parents but I’m so scared. Life could be SO much better if I just talked about it to my mom I don’t know what to do 😢😢😢🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
Love it! Thank you!
My goal is to calm my mind or to be less reactive
No, it's anger
I was diagnosed with cPTSD after my daughter Kaylah moved to Heaven in 2020. We were both wrongly diagnosed for many years with bipolar disorder after repeated abuse trauma. Thank you for sharing this.
Wow amazing how specific foods like fast food spikes cortisol boosting the stress then subliminally making people eat more junk food to aliviate that stress hence eating emotionally
When will the workbook be back in stock?
Hi. Can I use this meditation in a class I am offering to students training in Peer Support?
My PTSD alarm went off a few weeks back for the first time ever! I am almost 61yrs old. It is quite alarming! Trying to understand this has brought me to your channed❤ Thank you.
fear of losing stuff, memory intrusion self care
I don't know what anybody else is finding when they try or if this is just my city? Or just my country? But it sure is frustrating to me that the only therapist who seem to really have a grip on trauma for abuse victims are not actually accessible to me in their offices, only online it doesn't work this way. This is an avenue for disseminating information, but it can't go much further than that.
We all are many people, depending on where we are, who we are with, what we are doing, or who we are trying to please.
Lost my son in 2004 and my daughter passed last August of 23, now I’m losing my husband as well😢😢
nicely put
2:16 If I woke up when my ex girlfriend was sleeping I'd just go tend to our son even if I had work in five hours from that time. It's more so about doing what needs to be done. Even if it sucks. My problem is learning not to tackle too much at once.
this is very useful, i've been searching for content on pelvic floor relaxation and i had no idea it was related to anxiety
It's hard when it involves rude comments from family. :(
"If you don't pass this test at school, you'll starve to death." That was my thoughts exactly. And you know what, it was a legitimate worry. Because, I've experienced a way too long unemployment period in the end. Imagine you think about that high school test you didn't do well, while getting rejections for jobs after uni...Amazing!.. Of course one test in high school wasn't the reason for longterm unemployment, but for me it all started with that one small anxiety, then kind of like the snowball effect, things got even worse later in life. So, avoid anything but medical and mental treatment.
Comparison is fed by a scarcity mindset - golden.
That’s why I can’t sleep am scared am scared of shadow and sleep paralysis thank you 👍
I wanted to like this woman but the introduction to these subjects is dreadfully long. We all know about adrenaline and the flight or fight response. It's a shame really. I had flash backs jumping behind my eyes as I droned out from this.
I LOVE the tone of your voice. So many mental health professionals use what they see as a soothing tone that I find fake and judgy. You sound real. Love it. Thank you.
